Other manufacturers produce borosilicate and soda-lime glassware that holds up just as well and is more affordable or better for freezing and reheating.

A glass food-storage container’s durability largely depends on the materials used in their construction. Borosilicate glass is made of boron and silica, which have high resistance to thermal shock, allowing containers to go from one temperature extreme to another with minimal risk of cracking. On the other hand, soda-lime glass is composed of sodium oxide, limestone, and silica, which impart high scratch- and impact-resistance.

Both types of glass are durable, but in different ways. For example, if you were to reheat a frozen lasagna in a hot oven, borosilicate glass is able to handle that temperature difference better, which is why we recommended the Zwilling Fresh and Save set for freezing. But for frequent transporting or daily dishwashing, where breakage is more of a risk, soda-lime glass is the better choice.

Most glass food-storage containers—including all of our recommendations—are dishwasher safe. Dishwasher temperatures typically stay below 200 degrees Fahrenheit—borosilicate, soda-lime, and tempered glass are all capable of withstanding temperatures higher than 300 degrees. Although both appliances heat up food, they do so differently. Microwaves produce tiny waves of radiation, (i.e., micro waves) to heat up food, which glass food-storage containers easily withstand. However, ovens surround objects with copious amounts of heat. That being said, glass containers will crack if the heat is too high.

Glass containers made with tempered soda-lime, like the Glasslock set (our best for reheating), handle high ambient heat, not just radiation waves from a microwave. However, glass food-storage containers that are oven-safe, like borosilicate, soda-lime, and tempered, still have a temperature limit—usually 425 degrees Fahrenheit. This limit varies by brand, and exceeding this threshold won’t necessarily cause the glass to break, but instead weaken it.

Lids, on the other hand, have different appliance compatibility than the containers themselves. Lids are typically made of plastic or silicone, which should never be placed in the oven or microwave, and are hand-wash only. It’s also worth mentioning that neither lids nor glass food-storage containers are stovetop-safe. Any extreme localized heat, like the open flames of a gas stove, will cause the glass to shatter, even if it’s tempered. Glass food-storage containers are simply not manufactured to conduct heat the way other types of cookware do, as they are designed for storage and reheating.

In a glass food-storage container set, the largest piece typically holds 6–8 cups, while the smaller ones usually hold around 1 cup. However, this varies by set. For example, in the Caraway set, our best splurge pick, the largest container is 10 cups. On the other hand, the Magic Mill set, features a 4.4-cup container as its largest size.

Made in the U.S. out of soda-lime glass that’s been reinforced through tempering, this set is highly durable, easily holding up to daily use and any rough handling. The heat-resistant glass isn't just microwave-safe, it’s also oven-safe, so warming up food is simple and convenient.
